What’s in my iPhone Photography Camera Bag?
The iPhoneography apps I use.
How many iPhone photography apps do you really need? Well we need an iPhone camera replacement app for sure. The bundled camera app may be capable, even more so with each IOS upgrade, but it will always lag behind the specifications offered by specialist camera replacement apps.
So I’ve captured all these images. Some look pretty good. Some I’d like to tweak. Oh, I’m going to need more apps. The last thing I want to do is transfer my images to laptop and play around in GIMP or Photoshop, that’s just not cricket as we Brits say. Then I bump in to some guy called Skip who says iPhoneography is a glorious art form and ‘Did you know you can convert that great image into something resembling a painting.’ Oh, I’m going to need more apps…
The iPhone photography apps in this index are all apps used in workflows shared on Skipology. They represent some of my favorite iPhoneography apps, that much is true but there are many apps out there I’ve never used. Some I may have used and just not understood. Others I use often but maybe don’t feature on the workflows I share. It is not an exhaustive list.
The A-Z List (and beyond)
- The numbers in brackets indicate how many of my workflows the app is featured in. It is not a rating system.
- Clicking the app name will give an indexed summary of workflows. Click the summary to see how the app is used.
A
- Adobe Photoshop Express 16PS Express is an iPhone photography processing app from the Adobe Photoshop powerhouse. It has powerful desktop style image editing facilities together with a library of predefined iPhoneography effects and filters (some via in app purchases).[rating app="331975235"]
- AfterFocus 16With AfterFocus, you can create DSLR style shallow focus by selecting and masking focus area using a combination of manual and intelligent tools. Motion and gaussian blur effects can be added. The out of focus area can be further enhanced by the recognition of light spots with out of focus ‘bokeh’ effects achieved. The out of focus area can also be graduated as the distance increases. For a review and download links for the Andoid version please go here.[rating app="506271165"]
- Alt Photo 6Created by Alien Skin who are better known for their Pro Desktop products, Alt Photo recaptures the nostalgia of Kodachrome or goes all the way back to scratched Tintype. With Alt Photo, you can give any picture the right look, whether it’s subtle or stylized through a series of film effect filters.

- Aquarella 2Watercolor, or Aquarella is a wonderful transparent and luminous artistic media. Aquarella by Jixipix Software transforms your iPhone image into one with liquid pools of color blended fluidly on paper to create a watercolor with all the delicate details found in a traditional watercolor media.[rating app="593172305"]

- BlurFX 4Blur FX does one job really well in my opinion. If you need to manually add a little blur to feather areas possibly to correct other edits it’s excellent. I also use it on a larger scale to help with textured or painterly processing. Includes many more features and effects including vignettes.

- Camera+ 8My first iPhone photography camera replacement app and still sets a benchmark. Excellent focus and exposure points and a good range of filters and frames for post processing. The Camera+ Ansel filter is widely regarded as an iPhoneography classic. This is a must have app.[rating app="329670577"]
- CameraBag 2 7CameraBag 2 Mobile includes dozens of adjustable photo styles (with new ones added regularly for free download in the Online Style Library within the app), the ability to save customized looks as your own, and the ability to import advanced styles hand-made in CameraBag for Mac and PC.[rating app="582697694"]
D
- Diana Photo 1Diana photo is an iPhone app all about creating double exposure happy accidents. Double exposures can be captured within the app but I prefer to create random double exposures from my camera roll. Good fun.[rating app="694075857"]
- Diptic 1Diptic is my go to app for photo collages. It comes with a wide range of pre-defined layouts (well over 100) which can all be adjusted. Images can be edited within the app and internal and external corners can be rounded by any amount you set. Frames aren’t just straight edged, collages such as ‘Ying Yang’ style can be created (that is just one example). Borders between frames can be removed and with imagination Diptic can be used to combine images in a seemless way without the look of a collage.[rating app="377989827"]
- Distressed FX 7Distressed FX is a wonderful app for converting photographs to artwork. It’s in frequent use by me to add textures and other effects to my images during the conversion process that often results in the question “Is it a photograph or is it a painting?” The developers suggest that this app can be used to ‘transform even the most mundane photo into a work of art’ and is particularly suited to still life and landscape photography.[rating app="585702631"]
- Dramatic Black & White 1Ansel Adams said “Great Black & White photos aren’t taken – they’re made”. Using Dramatic Black & White you can make your own black and white photographs, with a wide range of presets and adjustable variables including grain, brightness, contrast, spotlight and the all important colour filters.[rating app="457075492"]
E
- EyeEm 2EyeEm is as much a Community as an iPhoneography app. It is a place to share images and meet and be inspired by other iPhoneography artists and photographers. Many iPhoneography organisations host their weekly / monthly / periodic challenges on EyeEm and for good reason. It is also a camera and contains a host of filters but I regard these as secondary, preferring to focus on the community and connectivity it provides. My own EyeEm images can be viewed at www.eyeem.com/skipology[rating app="445638931"]

- Filterstorm 51A very powerful iPhoneography app bringing desktop functionality to the iPhone. - Fotograf 0Fotograf is an iPhoneography filter app created by Nevercenter, the manufacturers of the excellent CameraBag 2. It’s filter set is classic rather than retro and is expandable through in app purchases or creating and saving your own filters.[rating app="790013619"]
- FrontView 8The phrase ’tilt-shift’ in photography is well known but is actually 2 different processes. In its purest form it is controlled at the point of capture using specialist lenses. FrontView is a great iPhoneography app that handles the ‘shift’ element in post processing. Its purpose is to correct perspective distortion – for example make the vertical lines of buildings run parallel rather than converge as they do when photographed from ground level. This is a very simple but useful app.

- Glaze 9Glaze creates a unique work of art from iPhone images using carefully chosen brush strokes, layering multiple styles together. An infinite range of styles are possible — acrylic, gouache, pastel, thick or thin, fine or coarse. Styles can be blended to create a unique effect. This is a very powerful app for moving a photograph to a painterly look.[rating app="521573656"]
H
- Handy Photo 14Handy Photo has a great clutter free interface and has some powerful tools. Its cropping and object movement tools are excellent but what makes it really interesting is the Magic Crop function which allows (for example) square images to be extended into a landscape format without stretching or cropping. Amazing technology. It also allows crooked horizons to be straightened by rotating without impacting original image size or cropping content. What really attracted me to Handy Photo initially was its beautiful range of textures and that’s what I mainly use it for. Over and above that, it has much more to offer.[rating app="598565205"]
- Hipstamatic 29Hipstamatic is an all in one camera replacement and processing app. Their catchphrase is “Digital photography never looked so analog.” Via a series of in app purchases you build up a library of lenses and films resulting in many many combinations. - Instagram 3Instagram was originally intended to share mobile photographs in real time with both capture and filter capability. In my view it is much more a social media network than a camera app. Its connectivity makes it an invaluable hub to add images to numerous networks. My own Instagram images can be viewed at instagram.com/skipology.[rating app="389801252"]
- Iris 6Iris is now called Laminar Pro and is both a powerful iPhoneography editing app and a library of predefined effects and filters. I use it primarily for the filters.

M
- MarbleCam 1MarbleCam takes pictures that look as if you had focused on a glass marble with a macro lens. It creates a distorted ‘Marbleized’ view of the iPhoneography image over the top of the original image which it shifts out of focus in the background. Used in isolation is has limitations but used in partnership with layering and masking apps it provides wonderfully unique content for surreal artwork.

- Mextures 19Mextures is an amazing iPhoneography app. With an ever expanding range of original textures categorized as light leaks, gritty and grainy film textures, dusty vintage film scans, tasteful grunge, and gorgeous gradients. These textures are created from actual 35mm film scans from various cameras, and a multitude of other natural elements. With 12 different blending modes, variable opacity levels and rotation capability, every new layer adds millions of possibilities to enhance your images and make them unique. It contains pre-created texture combinations and any combinations you create can be saved as formulas to be used again and again and if you wish shared with the iPhoneography community.[rating app="650415564"]
- Modern Grunge 16Modern Grunge is an iPhoneography app which applies tints, grunge and distress effects like no other. It allows grungy vignetted borders, rips and holes to reveal underlying (or overlying) textures. I prefer to use it delicately where its ability to ‘stain’ an image is impressive. Preferred bespoke combinations can be saved for use in future images. Highly recommended.

O
- Oggl 20Oggl is created by the people behind Hipstamatic and provides the same variety of lens and film combinations. The main difference between the two iPhoneography apps is that whilst the lens and film combination with Hipstamatic must be selected before the image is captured, within Oggl images can either be captured or imported and then the lens and film combination selected afterwards. Both apps work in partnership beautifully and both have large and active communities associated with them. Oggl is very much the son of Hipstamatic.[rating app="640339204"]

- The Amazing Type-Writer 1The Amazing Type-Writer by Doormouse Mfg. simulates a real typewriter my applying randomly pressured / inked characters onto cards. Am I missing out on a great iPhone photography app? Want to endorse or correct my thoughts on an app? Please let me know…
Hey this was a greeaaaattttttt post. I I have about 50 apps that i currently use and you just made me spend more money lol. I will be testing some of these out today. I thought I had alot but I don’t have most of these.. Thanks
Hi Nathan, thank you. Please let me know if any disappoint you. Always interested in views. I guess of your 50 there are plenty I don’t have. Any you’d recommend?
Excellent post though I have most of them. What about VSCO cam? Have you already trie it? Thans for let us know your camera bag.
Hi Maria, thank you very much. Yes I have VSCO cam but you’ve just reminded me to apply for my grid. Loooong way down the waiting list now I guess. Great app – just never featured in one of my workflows. Will have to change that.
Actually – got activated really quickly. I never get skip as a user name but I’m at http://skip.vsco.co – this makes me happy!
I enjoy your workflow posts very much. Thank you for the inspiration and a glimmer of assuredness. Thanks also for sharing your camera bag.
Mike
It’s my pleasure Mike. Thank you for your kind words. Much appreciated.
Great post! Very useful guide to make good decisions when getting photo-editing apps. Thank you Paul!
Hi Amalia, thank you very much.
This helps. I’ve tried a a good portion of these but didn’t always know what to do with it. I would say this is a great list for anyone wanting to get going with post production on their iPhoneography. I know this will take me a little deeper. Although for me the why is as much a part as the how. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.
Hi Ray, thank you very much and I totally agree. It’s just time and experience. Sometimes I buy an app and the interface confuses me and it gets pushed to one side. Then one day I’ll read a blog or have a few minutes and play around and suddenly the fog clears. Superimpose is a great example. Took me ages to get used to it – even ignored it for a long time. Now I can’t work without it. Right now my arch app nemesis is Decim8. Would really like to get to grips with that. One day!
terrific collection of information..to say nothing of your images..good going..very informative!
Hello Diane, thank you very much. It’s gratifying to know that my work is useful to others. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know.
Great post. Just wanted to let you know that Laminar is no longer available! I’m quite saddened by this! Have no clue what’s going on with them.
Thank you, yes me too. I tried to find it in the app store but couldn’t hence the lack of link. I haven’t heard any news either so am hoping it may be some IOS7 issue. It still works for me though so no idea.
Great post! Thank you! A couple of additional possibilities come to mind that may or may not be a fit for your workflow. I use Impressions for titling but have Title FX and will have to check it out. Blender has been my go-to app for blending for awhile. With so many photo sharing apps out there it’s hard to commit the time to try out another one but if you are up for it Starmatic and IPA are 2 more that I use in my Sharing folder. Thanks again!
Thank you Jennifer. Great suggestions. I have Blender (under Image Blender) and also have Starmatic but it was one network too far. Maybe I should revisit. The others are new to me so will take a look.
Lovely comprehensive list, Skip! I have a bunch of these to get started with, thanks to your recommendations on FB and G+. You can never have enough apps!
Thank you Jan and welcome to the world of iPhoneography. Really looking forward to seeing your work. Maybe I could flag a couple of other articles – my 10 must have apps https://skipology.com/iphone-photography-10-must-iphoneography-apps/ but also possibly in view of your style you may like the painterly / texture app stacking article https://skipology.com/iphone-photography-tutorial-texture-blend-app-stacking/ – I think you will find your own way though very easily.
Treasure trove!!! THANKS.
Looking for such a compiled list since months!!
Hi Michael, thank you very much. It’s a work in progress as with everything.
Is this list updated frequently? 🙂
Hi Karen, it only includes the apps I use on my blog so it’s updated as and when a new app gets used by me. If I become aware that an app isn’t available I add a note or remove the download link. All the ratings data, pricing, etc is updated directly from the App Store but there could be a small delay due to cached items.
Heh Skip, I pop by here from time to time and really appreciate your generosity of info/tips – you’ve helped me enormously! Today I’m here out of desperation …. Do you have any idea what’s up with the Snapseed app on the iPad? This is not happening on my iPhone – only the iPad. Certain pop-up windows are not opening fully: for instance, when I choose Center Focus, then touch Presets to choose one, a long vertical window appears with only THREE options – Portrait 1, P. 2, and Vignette. Scrolling is there BUT only barely … it doesn’t scroll and stop so I can’t choose any other options. SO FRUSTRATING. It’s the same for Frames, altho they scroll half way through the blacks [to the right].
Is this just me / my iPad??? I’ve spent the last hour trying to search the internet for anyone else reporting this problem – no luck. I can’t even find a website to report it to Snapseed [Google+, Nik ???] Any tips or direction you can send me would be immensely appreciated! Snapseed is my absolute fave go-to app … this situation is driving me crazy!!
thanks a lot,
Christi
Hi Christi, just following up on the email I sent you a while ago in response to your comment. I did manage to contact Snapseed and they advise, ‘My apologies for the inconvenience. We are currently aware of this issue. It affects all filter menus in Snapseed like Styles, crops, and frames. Unfortunately we do not have a workaround yet but we are working on a possible solution.’ I should add that I am aware of an ongoing pilot so hopefully an update is just around the corner. Cheers Skip.
I’m having identical problem and no answers from anyone.
Using iOS 8 on iPhone 4s and first generation iPad mini. Snapseed still works like it used to on my phone but the IPad – where I prefer to edit photos – has the same issues you are experiencing. Very frustrating !
Let’s hope there’s a fix soon.
Hi Janney, a little late I’ve just responded on here to Christi’s comment. Hopefully all is in hand and will be resolved soon.
Paul, this is awesome! I just peeked at the source, and am reminded why I quit coding 😉
Have a great weekend!!
Thanks very much David. I’m a ‘Google for an answer’ coder really but you pick bits up so know what to trust I think. I’ve just added a transient so this will update every 24 hours – much faster to load now. One thing always leads to another!
Am I the only one who doesn’t know what the “NO VISA” icon means?
Is this some sick Brit joke?
Outstanding post however I waas wondering if you could write a litte more onn this
subject? I’d be very thankful if you could elaborate a little bit
more. Cheers!
what an AMAZING website you have! Thank you. SO happy to have found you. Can you please tell me what the “no visa” symbol means? THX for all your amazing info

Thanks for sharing this great list! It’ll take a while to go through it, since, although I’m already using a lot of the same apps as you are, there’s also a lot of new ones in your list.
My favorite camera app is still [Procamera HDR](https://beheydt.be/en/ios-app-review-procamera-hdr-lowlight/), I use it about 85% of the time…
