With photographs and the occasional video taking up so much storage space on my iPhone (more accurately described as an iCamera) and my iPad crammed with images I was delighted to stumble across an app that offers unlimited free cloud storage.
Shutter makes it drop-dead simple to shoot endless photos and videos without stopping to clear space or missing important moments. We’ve eliminated all the annoying parts of using your iPhone to capture and share media by giving everyone automatic, free and unlimited cloud storage, in a simple and elegant app. Shutter gives consumers a clear solution to the mobile media storage problem.
Jonathan Benassaya, founder and CEO, StreamNation
On-device camera rolls and cloud-based storage systems typically operate independently, forcing users to manage their media storage or risk filling up the camera roll and getting the ‘out of space’ message. I know it’s a message I’ve seen more times than I’d like to admit. Shutter can solve this problem via the camera app which automatically syncs with an unlimited cloud storage locker.
I have to stress because I so rarely write about a single app that I have no affiliation with StreamNation. I like the idea of unlimited free cloud storage (who wouldn’t) and decided to share it as part of my series of iPhoneography articles.
For my purposes, I don’t see Shutter as a viable camera replacement app though. ProCamera 7 remains my app of choice. Instead, I will use Shutter via wifi spots to import images from my camera roll and throw them up to the cloud in batches. That dreaded iPhone battery capacity issue is also a consideration so for someone like me, manual file management is still necessary.
What is the situation with privacy?
Any content you upload onto StreamNation and/or Shutter is completely 100% private (default). No one has access or can have access unless you chose to share it.
Free unlimited cloud storage?
All the mobile photos and videos you take or upload from Shutter doesn’t consume any storage on your StreamNation account. So you are unlimited in terms of storage usage on Shutter. So you can take millions of photos right now with Shutter, you will still see that the storage usage is at 0GB.
Is your revenue source ad based?
We see Shutter as an entry point to StreamNation. If people are happy with their usage then they will put all their media on StreamNation and convert. That’s as simple as that. There will be no ads or re-sell of any data. The reason we are able to do that is because we have developed a highly cost effective private cloud and we can afford to offer Shutter free and unlimited on iPhone.
They also gave me a free tip…
If you want to speed up the upload for your first batch, just download the uploader software for mac or windows (available on streamnation.com) and plug your device to your computer.
Note: The ‘get unlimited’ option shown in this screengrab comes as standard and no longer appears in the app.
As described by SteamNation at the App Store:
Take and store photos and hour-long videos directly in the cloud. Never worry again about your phone’s storage.
Share hundreds of photos and videos privately or on social networks all at once, knowing you can still revoke access at anytime.
Display your memories and the ones your friends share in the beautiful Infinite Photo Stream timeline.
Take more beautiful pictures with our custom filters.
Download any media for offline viewing.
Back up all your iOS images and videos securely.
Watch your videos on your TV with AirPlay or Chromecast.
Only one backup?
I see StreamNation as a welcome addition to my existing iPhoneography backup processes, not a replacement. I have a 1TB external portable storage drive which I also use to store images. Many also reside on my laptop.
